Why ‘Ikasi Youth’ is so critical…

Thandi’s Story- THE STORY OF AN AVERAGE TOWNSHIP YOUTH

The prospects for young people growing up in the townships of Southern Africa are shocking. Children entering the school system are more likely to drop out in high school than they are to achieve any kind of gainful employment.

Improved school education is one way to brighten this outlook but there are many factors that go beyond what is covered in a school day. Youth need support and mentorship, they need life lessons that will help them avoid the pitfalls of their peers and more than anything they need a community of peers who can assist them to reach their potential.

Designing. Testing. Training.

We have developed a set of programs which are actively helping to reduce high school drop out rates, gang involvement and incidence of drug abuse. We are working to improve students results, communication skills and employablility, at the same time as doing all we can to see them study further.

We do this through running our own pilot centre where we learn to understand the needs of disadvantaged youth. We then look for the best materials to develop into programs that aim to address their needs. We further train and assist other organisations to run these solutions and programs in their own communities.
